The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion has been the site of unparalleled performances by stunning music luminaries and virtuosos. It was the home of the LA Philharmonic for decades and the site for more than 20 Academy Awards presentations between 1969 and 1999. It has been the home of LA Opera since 1986, sharing its stage with Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center.

Our Story
The last show currently lined up for the end of April is a new musical work developed for theater, titled “Bone Hill” by Martha Redbone. Once Wheeler’s bank, the corner at street level would be a pre-and post-show theatre bar, and the space west of it was transformed into an official box office for the first time. Rigsby Peterson said that catering a performance to families on the busy holiday night in town offers something different, and hopefully, well-received. Another priority of the executive director and her team, when putting together the programming, was to create family-oriented opportunities, Rigsby Peterson said. She mentioned the Chinese acrobatic show coming to the Wheeler in February, featuring The Peking Acrobats and performers from The Shanghai Circus, as a great production for families. An early 20th-century arson fire damaged the interior, and in its wake the theater fell into disuse. Later in the century it was renovated several times, twice from designs by Herbert Bayer, to bring it back into full use. For a while the Pitkin County Library was located in the building as well. But Rick missed the West Coast, so in 1983 he returned to the Bay Area and won a vocal scholarship to Sonoma State University where he became an assistant to the director in the Opera department. In 1986 he received the Award for Outstanding Solo Performance from the National Association of Jazz Educators (NAJE) at the Berkeley Collegiate Jazz Festival. The first fire caused very little damage, but nine days later, the second fire burned nearly the whole structure down. The City of Aspen purchased the Wheeler Opera House in 1918 with the goal to reconstruct it. Finally, in the 1940s, this reconstruction project began, and visitors returned to the space during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

When Wheeler heard about the silver strikes in the mountains, he sold his interest in Macy’s and headed to Aspen. Returning to his roots as a soloist, Rick continues to perform concerts across the country as well as giving workshops on voice and guitar.
