The Christmas markets of the North Rhine-Westphalia region are a magical destination for a weekend city break in Germany in December. Cologne received Westphalia as a duchy in 1180, but the duchy was in fact confined mainly to an area northeast of Cologne. Next up, we boarded the train from Essen to Dortmund, less than 30 minutes away. Christmas markets are a great excuse to visit cities in Germany that you might not take time to visit otherwise. It is approximately a 30 minute train ride from Düsseldorf Airport to Essen. We emerged from the train station in Essen into a winter wonderland filled with cauldrons of piping hot glühwein and even a singing moose called Charley.

Lovetta Delphia Alt, age 85, of Petersburg, WV, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2022 at E.A. Hawse Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Baker, WV. Lovetta was born on February 4, 1937 in Pansy, WV and was a daughter of the late Harry Eston Judy and Delphia Judy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maxel “Max” Dow Alt in 2009.

We followed a small group of people through a side door and into a small garden and cemetery. You never know what you'll find if you take time to explore. We've seen plenty of nice churches on visits to Germany and the church itself was lovely enough. Münster is just another 30 minute ride on the train from Dortmund.
Essen, city, North Rhine–Westphalia Land , western Germany. It is situated between the Rhine-Herne Canal and the Ruhr River. Essen was originally the seat of an aristocratic convent , still represented by the cathedral (Münsterkirche; now the seat of a Roman Catholic bishop), completed in the 15th century. In the suburb of Werden the abbey church was founded in 796 as part of a monastery. The convent and the abbey exercised local sovereignty as imperial states until their dissolution in 1802, when Essen passed to Prussia.

There is definitely plenty of food to choose from at the Christmas markets in Dortmund. However, sometimes it's nice to get off your feet after walking and standing all day. That did have a side effect of making the train extra crowded but we enjoyed seeing the mass of yellow and black clad fans making their way to the stadium. Dortmund won the match which lent an extra buzz to the Christmas markets around town. Our weekend in North Rhine-Westphalia was clearly off to a promising stop.

Eunice Jean Kisamore, age 81 of Seneca Rocks, WV passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at her home. Eunice was born on November 27, 1941 in Cabins, WV and was a daughter of the late Denver Hester Nelson and Leona Belle Nelson.
We visited Münster on a Sunday after spending the night in Dortmund. Dortmund makes a good home base for a Christmas market weekend getaway. The Grey is located just a 5 minute walk from the Dortmund Hauptbahnhof and features a friendly staff and boutique feel.
You just need to be aware that this special train ticket is not valid on the faster German ICE trains. We opted for the "handy ticket" which we surfaced in the DB Bahn app on our mobile phones so we didn't have to worry about printing our rail ticket and potentially losing it. The industrial hub of the Ruhr, Essen is also a retail trade centre, a rail junction, and a business service centre. The development of ironworks, steelworks, and coal mines during the 19th century stimulated Essen’s rapid growth from a small town to the largest industrial city in the Ruhr coalfield. It was occupied by the French (1923–25) and suffered heavy destruction in World War II as a centre of German war industry. The city has since been rebuilt with large, modern administrative and office buildings and housing. Germany can be challenging to visit on Sundays because all the shops and some cafes are closed.

Wayne was born on August 31, 1937 in Petersburg, WV and was a son of the late Loss Samuel Kuykendall and Anne Mary Kuykendall. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by four brothers, Samuel, Frederick, Melvin and Tommy Kuykendall and four sisters, Ruth Alt, Mildred Westfall, Blanche Plauger and... There's still time to send flowers to Justin Jay Kisamore's service. This is the cost to purchase a burial vault from the funeral home. A burial vault is required for most cemeteries, but you may choose to purchase one online or elsewhere, if you'd wish.
