Wheeler Opera House announces first shows of the winter season

With five days of the best and brightest comics on the mainstage, you can enjoy side-splitting, belly aching laughs from your seat in our beautiful, historic opera house. Most of these acts clearly demonstrate the achievement of perfection through finding harmony between mind and body – an ancient concept in the Orient. The art form has been transformed from its simple “folk art” roots to the spectacular entertainment event we see today, by centuries of tradition. From the very beginning, Aspen’s culture has been shaped by the remarkable nature that surrounds our mountain town.

The Los Angeles Opera at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

Mixing dexterous sleight of hand, Chaplin-esque vaudevillian comedy, and ingenious visual effects, SNAP conjures a marvelous, magical cabaret perfect for the whole family. It is one of two buildings in town named after early developer Jerome B. Wheeler. Originally, the opera house was located on the third floor, with retail space at street level and professional offices on the second floor.

Tours

In 1991 he was invited to be the stage director for the Bear Valley Music Festival where he worked with Gwendolyn Jones, John Garrison and Evelyn de la Rosa in productions of "Carmen," "La Traviata," and "The Abduction from the Seraglio" among others. In 1973 his family moved to San Francisco, and Rick went on the road playing concerts, lounges and coffee-houses across the western states. He picked up bass along the way and studied orchestration and arranging with Dave Wheeler in Columbus, Ohio, while teaching guitar and theory to private students.

Just a few years later, in 1893, Aspen experienced “The Quiet Years” due to economic issues, and thus the opera house was temporarily closed. Additionally, in November of 1893, the opera house experienced two fires. For more information about these and other upcoming events at the Wheeler, visit wheeleroperahouse.com. While the Wheeler team works around the clock on the festival line-up, you can buy an Aspen Laugh Festival Knock Knock Pass at a deep discount.

In 2011, the venue executed a full remodel of its basement and two ground-floor lease spaces. Between these two projects, over $5 million will have been invested in renovating and preparing the venue for the next hundred years of its life. Established with much fanfare during the city's initial boom years in the late 19th century, it fell into decline along with much of the rest of Aspen's buildings when the silver market crashed. Restoration efforts began in the mid-20th century, as Aspen became established as a ski resort town, and the affluence that attracted in turn produced more money for further restoration efforts.

Together they are reconceptualizing what a violin concert looks and sounds like, building bridges to a place where Mozart, Marvin Gaye, and Kendrick Lamar harmoniously coexist. The Wheeler encourages patrons to buy early and save up to 15% off premium and standard seats, the listed price includes all ticket handling fees. Purchase tickets by midnight on November 4, 2023, to get the best seats at the best price. The affordability of Wheeler Opera House tickets is made possible through the support of the City of Aspen Real Estate Transfer Tax, ensuring accessible entertainment for all.

Rick Dougherty doesn't remember a time when he didn't sing and his beautiful tenor voice has garnered him compliments from Judy Collins, Chet Atkins and Tom Paxton, to name just a few. Rick played piano at home, but in high school he began playing guitar with a particular interest in finger-styles and within a year he was appearing in local coffee-houses in Pasadena. By the time he left the City College he was playing ragtime guitar and had been given a citation by the music department as one of its most promising students. If you’re ready to finalize a trip to the Wheeler Opera House, then be sure to purchase your tickets upon choosing the event.

Guthrie Trapp is one of Nashville’s preeminent guitar talents who is a brilliant mix of musical influences, exploring country, blues, Latin, reggae, jazz, rock, and experimental music. Jesus Guerrero, Flamenco master from Spain, started playing guitar at the age of eleven years under the tutelage of master teacher José Luis Balao. His natural virtuosity with the instrument and his musical creativity have led him to be one of the most sought-after figures of the current flamenco scene.

For the first time, the second floor was established as a lobby for the theatre and to this day features a spectacular of Aspen Mountain. Prepare to embark on a mind-bending journey as SNAP, a group of South Korean illusionists, takes the stage, playing with space, time, and the otherworldly to create a spectacle like no other. This family-friendly addition to our season program will boggle your mind with impressive powers of prestidigitation.

Children 4 and under are not allowed in the theater, except for family-friendly programs. We ask parents to use their discretion in bringing very young children. The Wheeler Opera House is located in the heart of downtown Aspen at 320 East Hyman Avenue, at the corner of Hyman and Mill Street.

Once you arrive at the theater, our staff and volunteers will greet you and be ready to help guide you through your experience at the Wheeler. The Vault bar lobby is located on the second floor, and the theater is located on the third floor. Regardless of age, everyone must have a ticket and be able to sit quietly throughout the performance. In 2020, the Wheeler would embark on an exterior masonry project that lasted two years. This necessary facelift to the stonework will hopefully ensure the Wheeler stands another 135 years at the corner of Hyman and Mill, across from the fountains.

The Broad Stage's programming often includes innovative productions by local and international companies, making it a hub for experiencing cutting-edge opera in a cozy environment. On opening night, satin programs were scented with rose water, and the Wheeler glowed with some of the region’s first electric lights. Later came fires, vacancy, magical performances under fire-charred beams, and more than 70 years. The bar located on the second floor offers a selection of beer and wine and small snack foods. The Wheeler Opera House attempts to begin all events at their scheduled time as a courtesy to performers and fellow audience members.

Leawood Menu Favorites

From traditional rolls like the California roll or dragon roll to the chef’s special rolls — like their sweetheart roll filled with tuna, lobster salad, mango, and avocado — there’s something for everyone. Guests rave about the freshness, price, the must try noodle dishes, and the ever popular swanky interior décor. Sushi Junki comes in as a local favorite in Berwyn, and based on the rave reviews, their takeout game is hard to compete with. Sushi Junki has a huge menu with a variety of unique, specialty hand rolls, including a fan favorite — The Spicy Mexican — a blend of shrimp tempura, spicy crab, jalapeno, cilantro, and avocado. Best of all, they partner next door with J Wok Chinese Kitchen, which means you’ll also find a whole other menu — with classic options like fried rice — to make everyone happy. When you’re supporting local businesses, New Star Restaurant is the perfect example of a hidden gem.

Temaki — Temaki is sushi that has been handrolled into a cone shape — typically with the seaweed on the outside. Uramaki — Urakami is what most people think of when it comes to sushi. It is similar to maki, but the seaweed wraps the filling with the rice on the outside. To celebrate this year’s upcoming restaurant week, we’re taking a look at one of everyone’s favorites. Here's our breakdown of sushi restaurants by area so you can try one, or as many as you’d like.

In the mid-90s, the first Sushi House was opened in Westmont by a determined female business owner named Diana who ignored the skepticism from her friends and family who said Americans wouldn’t eat raw fish. Chicagoans loved the restaurant and the Sushi House now has eight locations, including the one in Oak Park managed by Cathy Li & Steve Qi.The husband and wife duo is known as the life of the party. And that’s a good thing since Sushi House Oak Park is the only location with a hard liquor license! Stop by for a drink with Cathy and Steve at the underground Dragon Bar Lounge.

Established over 60 years ago by the Moy Family, and handed off in 2014, New Star Restaurant is a beloved establishment by Elmwood Park residents and has a menu that encompasses a variety of different Asian cuisines, including sushi. From house special maki rolls and Thai noodle dishes to hibachi and teriyaki, New Star has something for every taste. Although not all, most restaurants that offer sushi also offer other types of Asian cuisine as well. Many restaurants will also offer noodle dishes such as Pad Thai, hot soups like ramen, or stir fries. But it’s always best to check out the menu ahead of time to make sure there’s something you’ll like. Most of the time, restaurants have larger menus to make sure you can try a little of everything.

Although most sushi contains raw fish, most restaurants — especially in America — carry Maki rolls that are either deep fried (which cooks the fish) or have simple, vegetarian options such as the cucumber, avocado, and asparagus rolls. So if you’re not fully into eating raw fish, but your friends are going out for dinner, you’ll likely be able to find something to eat. Whether it’s date night or delivery, one thing seems to be consistent — the incredible sushi they serve.
